The gutter is the space between the panels in a comic book. The significance of the gutter is where the reader of the comic takes the two images he/she is presented and has to use imagination to fill in the blanks and create one complete image that makes sense in their mind.

The reigning economic system is a vicious circle of isolation. Its technologies are based on isolation, and they contribute to that same isolation. From automobiles to television, the goods that the spectacular system chooses to produce also serve it as weapons for constantly reinforcing the conditions that engender “lonely crowds.” With ever-increasing concreteness the spectacle recreates its own presuppositions.

The 2004 remake of horror icon George A. Romero's, "Dawn of the Dead" by Zack Snyder is an excellent example to help describe Debord's point 28 in The Society of the Spectacle.

Our economic system that has been instilled in our society since day one has been designed to isolate us into individuals and keep us from large groups. The epitome of consumer America is that of a shopping mall. The movie "Dawn of the Dead" is about a group of survivors of a zombie outbreak finding shelter in a abandoned shopping mall.
